▶ CHARACTER
NAME: A-Qing
CANON: The Untamed
CANON POINT: Shortly before meeting Song Lan.
AGE: 17
BACKGROUND: https://modao-zushi.fandom.com/wiki/A-Qing
Note: Her background between The Untamed and Mo Dao Zu Shi is fundamentally the same.
PERSONALITY: From the time she was a child having to stick it out on her own, A-Qing learned one very important lesson: Pity could get you anywhere if you played your cards right. Her eyes gave her the appearance of blindness, and while a good chunk of people tended to look down on the poor and downtrodden, most were more likely to feel sorry for her. Taking this lesson to heart, A-Qing quickly ran with it. She was a child of the streets who knew how to claw tooth and nail to survive on her own.
And in the end, that's a lot of what colors A-Qing's personality. She's a survivor and one who perfected her skills in lying, cheating, and pickpocketing in order to keep herself alive at any cost. She endures even sexual harassment and violence without breaking character or flinching, showing just how stubborn and strong her will is. She's calculating and manipulative, having absolutely no qualms with using her gender or her apparent disability to her advantage to either swindle people out of their money or possessions, or to get herself out of trouble.
Her acting skills are nearly unparalleled even in a canon full of great actors like Xue Yang, whom even A-Qing manages to fool. When Xue Yang tries to test her by throwing things at her or even trying to make her walk right into his sword point, she reacts as if she truly was blind, not flinching or giving in. She keeps this act up for years, far beyond hat she had to in the past.
A-Qing also has a quick wit and a quick mind for thinking of excuses and plans on the fly, and isn't above using her status as a young woman to get someone on her side. She's quick to play the victim or cry on command in order to weasel her way out of trouble, coming up with lies and excuses on the fly for her behavior or others'.
But A-Qing isn't just a scrappy survivor. She cares very deeply for those who manage to gain her loyalty and affection. When she meets Xiao Xingchen, she's quickly struck by his altruism. While at first she thinks to manipulate this for her own good, it quickly becomes apparent to her that Xiao Xingchen means his kindness; it's not a front at all. From that, it's hard to figure what exactly it is that makes A-Qing decide that they must travel together. She might have meant it at first just as a way to protect herself, having someone bigger and stronger who could frighten off any would-be threats, or maybe she took one look at the man and thought, "he's too nice for this world, he's going to get mugged because he's an idiot and I guess I gotta protect him."
Either way, the intention doesn't matter so much as what came from it: A-Qing grew deeply fond of Xiao Xingchen and respected him greatly, seeing him at least as a big brother figure on whom she could rely on. Since he was actually blind, A-Qing could get away with acting like a sighted person around him without him actually noticing, though she kept the act up around everyone else and never told him the truth. She quite literally can, and doe, die for him and tries to keep him safe. But ultimately it's this strict adherence to her act of a blind girl that is part of their eventual fall and deaths, since she doesn't reveal her sight to Xiao Xingchen to bring up what the unnamed man staying with them looks like, which would have led to Xiao Xingchen to discovering that the man was the wanted delinquent Xue Yang.
Speaking of, her relationship with Xue Yang is quite complicated too. The two have an antagonistic relationship with each other, with A-Qing able to see clearly (literally and figuratively) that Xue Yang is just wrong. She instantly gets a bad feeling about him, which is only proven true when he tests her sight and, upon assuming she really is blind, lets his guard down enough that she can see the true faces he makes that unsettle her. Despite her fear, though, she's feisty and snarky with him, making sarcastic comments and riling him up. He picks on her in turn, the two of them developing a strangely sibling-like bond. She keeps her suspicions alive for the years they live together, though, almost always on her guard, following him and Xiao Xingchen on their night hunts to observe them and make sure nothing bad is happening.
Even after her death, her sense of loyalty and duty to Xiao Xingchen and seeing Xue Yang brought to justice drives her. She's terrified of Xue Yang but spends 10+ years evading any attempts on her spirit that he might have, while also trying to disrupt his plans, drive unwitting visitors away from the city, and even trying to guide and protect the junior disciples who end up trapped in the village. She even goes as far as to help Lan Wangji in his fight against Xue Yang in the dense fog, tapping her walking stick against the ground where he appears so that he can be located.
But despite her survivalist mindset, A-Qing is still a young girl at heart. She enjoys her youth, having fun where she can in the simplest things, like splashing in streams, skipping around, joking and laughing with people. She's quick to cheer up and quick to get angry, wearing her heart and her emotions on her sleeve (when she's not trying to act, anyhow).
